Compost
At Snipes Farm and Education Center, composting is more than just creating readily usable organic matter from our cooking leftovers.
It’s about sustaining the land, teaching people about environmental stewardship, and reducing what is sent to landfills. Composting is a powerful way to enrich the soil, support the growing of healthy plants and reduce waste.

A circle of life
Compost is created from a variety of organic materials, including kitchen scraps, weeds, grass clippings, leaves, and coffee grounds.
These materials decompose, transforming into nutrient-rich soil that enhances plant growth and improves soil structure. By utilizing compost, we not only reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills but also create a closed-loop system that benefits our community and environment.
Compost needs time to “cook down” with heat and oxygen supporting the decomposition process, breaking down the items added in order to create a rich dark soil.
With the support of the Master Gardeners, a three-bin compost system was created to support the composting efforts. three-bin system allows us to have one bin being added to, the second one actively breaking down, and the third one ready for community members to use.
Step one: Collect scraps
Kitchen scraps, weeds, grass clippings, leaves, or coffee grounds. No animal products!
Step two: Mix and wait
A large open bin or a compost tumbler can contain the scraps as they break down.
Step three: Return to the soil
Compost provides a nutrient-rich fertilizer for crops the following year.
Recycling at home
It’s important to avoid composting meat, dairy, oils, and processed foods. These can attract unwanted critters like rats or groundhogs, as well as create a smelly compost pile. Additionally, you should avoid putting in chemically treated plant materials and non-biodegradable items in order to support the health of your new soil.
At Snipes Farm, we teach our visitors about the importance of composting and how it contributes to sustainable agriculture. By participating in our composting initiatives, community members learn to reduce their environmental footprint while enhancing the productivity of our farm.
Together, we can cultivate a greener future, one compost pile at a time!
