Tiny Forest
We planted our Tiny Forest in November of 2024, and we are pleased to report that it is flourishing! This innovative project, initiated by dedicated volunteers Paula and Jim Walter, aims to create a sustainable green space that benefits both the environment and the community.
The Tiny Forest concept was created by Akira Miyawaki in Japan as a way of quickly building a natural forest environment, as a forest can grow 10x faster utilizing this method versus a traditional method.
The goal of this project is to absorb carbon from the atmosphere, filter water, and mitigate flooding and runoff from our parking lot. As Paula noted, it also serves as a natural barrier, helping to reduce highway noise from Route 1, enhancing the farm’s tranquil atmosphere.

A successful planting
At the first anniversary of the forest’s planting, the success is remarkable.
“We only lost about 5% over the first winter, which is an extremely good rate of success. We installed an irrigation system when we built the Tiny Forest, and it has made a significant impact,” Paula shared. This high survival rate showcases the effectiveness of the forest’s design and care.
As the trees continue to grow, visitors can enjoy a serene experience in the heart of the Tiny Forest, complete with a bench for reflection. This space not only contributes to local biodiversity but also invites community members to connect with nature and appreciate the environment.
Stewarding the land
As the Tiny Forest continues to grow, it stands as a testament to the positive impact of thoughtful environmental stewardship.
